Sunrise, Runrise

Just when my training hit a low point, I found the mix-up I needed in an unexpected place—waking up early and seeing the sunrise during my runs. I have always loved morning runs, yet never prioritize them. I usually choose the luxury of sleeping until I wake naturally over getting out early.

My hand was forced the last couple of weeks while we’ve had contractors working on a bathroom renovation project at home. I need to be up and out the door with enough time to make it back before the crew arrives, mostly to help manage our very high maintenance, super worrier (yet wonderful) dog, Barnaby.

Every time I manage to get out in the wee hours, I’m reminded of the glory that is a morning run. Cooler air, steam rising up off the river, the changing colors in the sky, the quiet and stillness as the rest of the world slowly wakes.

I needed to re-find joy in being out there, running, drinking in the wide world. An everyday moment elevated to something divine. The sky is alive, ever changing. It will only ever look just so this once.

#WriteAsRun Prompt No. 22: Sunrise, runrise.
Get out the door first thing in the morning. No excuses, no delay. What do you notice about the morning sky? How does it feel to start your day on the run?
